More up to date recent works, reports and pics from the world of a modern millwright!

Happy new year!

2009 was very busy year with both a move and marriage!

Work was interupted by flu, car accident and Jury service but hopefully all these set backs are behiend us now.

Work at Swannington is 90% complete with the petticoat being fitted over christmas, only the finished fan gears and blades need to go up now.

The New pit wheel for mill farm Stowting has been completed as have the new bearings which have all been installed. Jury service has stalled the wheel construction but we envisage this to come together quickly for fitting in the better weather in spring.

Work at Berkswell has become protracted with more work to lintles and floor beams uncovered and undertaken. Work on the cap frame has been carrying on off site in our new yard an Mill Farm with new shears in place and the ribs being repaired presently.

A breakthrough has been made by Andrew Norman, whose restoration has taken a back burner whilst all the other large jobs are finished. Andrew has found a watercolour depicting the mill working in 1796, interestingly with a tailpole.

On top of this New sails have been made to Martin Watts design for Ashton windmill chapel Allerton, These were due to be fitted for national mills weekend but due to windy/wet weather this was delayed untill last week.

In the mean time work on brick work repairs to Berkeswell are underway with the tower covered in scaffolding.

Percival engineering have turned the journal for the poll end and brass, that will be ready for fitting later this week pictures to follow.

Following several enquiries we are now in a posistion to offer a complete brand new New Full size post windmill, finished with tailpole or fan mounted winding (extra) with iron windshaft & poll end with options of patent, spring or common sails. Mill will come with iron brake wheel and brake band, but can be furnished to mill flour with either head and tail, spur gear, two pairs of stones or other power take off for other machinery or electrical generation.

Email for full details.

Prices from £150,000.

The mill is based on a midlands type (largely on Derek Ogdens design for the reconstruction of the Flowerdew mill see below) which was loosely based on Baxterly mill, with some improvments in the structural bracing, which was always limited on midlands type mills.

Barrows engine 316 is now in several bits!

Originally needing a new tubeplate and tubes, unfortunatly the boiler barrel has been found to be rather thin so it looks like it may be more terminal and expensive as the cylinder has to come off, like all historic structures theres a duty of car owning somthing 140 odd years old and unique so watch this space whilst we work out how to approach it, so far the boiler will need a barrel and tubeplate and tubes

hopefully when finished it will look like this.....
